Drowning

Drowning in work that is.

Since the new year began, my daily to-do list piles up more and more.  Part of it is my 2010 goal to be more productive, and part of it is catching up on things that’s been left behind over the past few months.  I gave myself a “day off” on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day, but paid for it the rest of the week – and this was after I worked the prior weekend.  This makes working a typical 9-5 a little more appealing, (not to mention the added benefit of group health insurance and paid time off) though unemployment is still very high and even more impossible in my field and previous occupation.

I thought about going back to school, but just as I was feeling fourteen years ago when I had to decide what I wanted to do with my life, I still don’t have a clue now.  Every occupation that I’m remotely interested in is either saturated, moved overseas, I don’t have the physical qualifications due to MS,  or there is just no money in it.

Its hard feeling like I’m constantly in limbo when it comes to career, but I guess that puts me in the same boat with mostly everyone else in one way or another.  I do really enjoy Green and Chic, but I feel like I need a “safety net”  just in case.  A friend suggested talking to a career counselor.  That may not be a bad idea.

Have you ever consulted with a career counselor?  If so, how was your experience?

I’ve never consulted with a career counselor, but my brother have, and was very happy with the outcome. Worth a try..

Like Vered, I’ve never consulted with a career counselor, but I’ve heard they can make a huge difference in a person’s life.

    I agree, it’s not a bad idea.

Do you really need to know what you want to do with your life? We’re not all made for living life according to a recipe. Some people are happier floating from one interesting role to another, enjoying their journey as it unravels. That only works if you are aware that this is what you are doing – otherwise you’ll be forever unhappy from believing you are suposed to have a plan. Personally I make it up as I go along.

MsOzhild, Thank you for your comment. I have been floating for the past X amount of years, but that hasn’t worked very well for me. I wish I can be one of those people that it works for, but it just had me running in circles.

I nearly consulted a career counselor once and then my cheapness got in the way. Consulting one sounds like a good idea though.

Consulting a career counselor is a GREAT idea – good advice from your friend, IMHO….;-)

I think career counselors can be very helpful. You might also consider a career coach. They have different training than counselors. In addition, most will offer one free trial session, which gives you a chance to see how the fit works.

    Good luck with this!
